Cookie Run: Kingdom Toppings Guide

How toppings, set bonuses, substats, and tarts work — plus what every topping does, the 5-topping builds cookies actually run, and which cookies favor each set, pulled straight from The Cookie Book's in-game build data.

How Toppings Work

Five slots, set bonuses

Cookies start with one topping slot and unlock the rest at Lv.15, 20, 25, and 30 — five in total. Equipping toppings from the same set activates a set bonus (some sets trigger at 2 or 3 pieces, the biggest at 5), which is why most builds run five of a kind.

Rarities: XS, S, and M

Toppings drop in three sizes — XS (Common), S (Rare), and M (Epic). Every size of a set grants the same main stat; higher rarities just roll a bigger boost and carry more substat slots: one on XS, two on S, three on M. Endgame builds want M toppings.

Upgrading & substats

Upgrading with Topping Pieces and Coins raises the main stat and unlocks substat slots along the way (at +6, +9, and +12). Substats roll randomly — chasing the right ones (Cooldown for supports, DMG Resist for frontliners, ATK or CRIT% for damage dealers) is what separates a decent topping from a perfect one.

Toppings and Tarts

Each topping grants one main stat — the badge shows the boost a maxed topping provides, and the figure below each card is how many Cookie-Dex builds run at least one of it.

Every topping also has a matching Topping Tart, shown beside its icon. Tarts act like a sixth topping slot, granting the same stat as their set but no substats. A tart's bonus grows with how many matching toppings you have equipped (a Searing Raspberry Tart gives more ATK at five raspberries than at three), which is why builds almost always run the tart that matches their main set. Tarts come in Common, Rare, and Epic and are crafted in the Into the Depths workshop from Flour Stone, Sugar Ore, and Butter Amber — Butter Amber guarantees an Epic.

Upgrading Toppings

A freshly-dropped topping is only a fraction of its final power. Upgrading raises the main stat and unlocks the substat slots that decide whether a topping is worth keeping.

Sizes & levels

A topping's size caps how far it can be upgraded: XS (Common) tops out at Lv.3, S (Rare) at Lv.6, and M (Epic) at Lv.12. Every size grants the same stat, but a maxed M is worth far more — a Searing Raspberry climbs from +3% ATK at Lv.0 to +9% ATK at +12, and only the M size reaches all three substat slots. Endgame builds run M toppings almost exclusively.

An un-upgraded Epic Searing Raspberry topping at level 0 of 12, granting 3% ATK with all three substat slots still locked.
Fresh drop — +3% ATK, substats still locked.
The same Searing Raspberry fully upgraded to +12, granting 9% ATK plus three unlocked substats.
Fully upgraded — +9% ATK and three substats revealed.

Leveling with Topping Pieces

Each upgrade costs Topping Pieces and Coins, and the early levels never fail. Instead of tapping Upgrade one level at a time, use Auto-Upgrade to jump straight to a milestone — +6, +9, or +12 — in a single confirm.

The Topping Upgrade window showing a +0 to +1 step costing 3 Topping Pieces and 560 Coins at 100% success, with the Auto-Upgrade popup offering +6, +9, and +12 milestones.
The upgrade window shows the exact Piece and Coin cost; Auto-Upgrade fast-forwards to +6, +9, or +12.

The "Six-Plus" rule: the first substat unlocks at +6, so if you're short on Pieces, take a topping to +6 and equip it — you get a live substat without sinking the much larger cost of pushing to +9 or +12. Save the full climb for your keepers.

Substats (bonus effects)

The slots unlocked at +6, +9, and +12 roll random bonus effects from a pool of ten, each within its own percentage range. This is where a topping is truly made or broken — two identical maxed toppings can be worlds apart depending on what they rolled.

The in-game Bonus Effects list: ATK, DEF, HP, ATK SPD, CRIT%, Cooldown, DMG Resist, CRIT Resist, Amplify Buff, and Debuff Resist, each with its percentage roll range.
All ten possible bonus effects and their roll ranges.

Chase DMG Resist (the widest range, up to 6%), Cooldown, ATK, and CRIT% — the substats that move the needle in most builds. Treat DEF, Crit Resist, and Amplify Buff as filler; a topping stacked with those is a breakdown candidate, not a keeper.

Resonant Toppings

Beyond the ten regular toppings, Cookie Run: Kingdom also has Resonant Toppings — special, themed toppings that offer significantly better substats and higher minimum rolls compared to regular toppings. Each themed set only resonates with certain cookies, making the right pairings a core part of endgame builds.

Resonant toppings even draw their substats from a tighter, stronger pool — fewer possible effects, all with higher minimum rolls than a regular topping can reach (DMG Resist starts at 4.5% instead of 1%).

The Cookie Book has a dedicated two-way lookup covering every Resonant Topping and the cookies that resonate with it.
